The Fillmore District

Emblematic of San Francisco’s rich cultural and ethnic history, the Fillmore District was formerly known as the “Harlem of the West.” Legends including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, and Charlie Parker have all played there. In the 60s, the “Fillmore Sound” became synonymous with Summer of Love artists like Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane. Today, the area remains vibrant, and is home to the annual Fillmore Street Jazz Festival.
